A Slave's Collar

"I fled, arrest me. If you bring me back to my master Zoninus, you will receive a gold coin as reward."
This promise is posted on the plate of an iron collar. The collar was probably destined to a slave. In ancient times, the living conditions of the slaves could be very tough and some of them tried to escape; that's why some masters chose to provide them with a collar as an alternative to fire marking. The promised amount, a solidus, provided by law in these cases, is equivalent to the cost of a simple woolen coat. 4th century AD
