DESERT TRAIN
On 31 January 1901, the von Hallwyls board the train in Wadi Halfa in Sudan to continue their journey to Khartoum. The journey takes them through the desert, on a railway the construction of which began in Wadi Halfa in the 1870s and reached Khartoum on 31 December 1899. In other words, it had existed for exactly one year when the von Hallwyls embarked on their journey.
