Depicted at the center of this earthenware bowl is a seven-lobed abstract shape that may symbolize a cave. Caves are abundant in the limestone-rich zones of Mesoamerica. Caves were considered sacred places and represented entrances to the Underworld, where people traveled to upon death. Caves were also places of creation as can be heard in Mexica (Aztec) religious stories that reference a cave with seven chambers.
