Firenze, Italy

This letter was send Michelangelo to his brother Buonarroto in 18 September 1512. The artist, occupied on the scaffolds of the Sistine Chapel’s vault, when he heard the news of the invasion of the Spanish, of the sack of Prato and of the consequent fall of the First Florentine Republic, wrote to his brother to reassure him and to reccommend his caution. From the letter transpire also the financial difficulties of Michelangelo in that period because Giulio II, looking forward to seeing the vault completed, had delayed the payments to the end of the work, leaving the artist “barefoot and naked”.
