Leone Leoni, Aretine artist and Michelangelo’s friend, on 14 March 1561 addressed this letter to Buonarroti, accompanying it with four medals, in silver and bronze, dedicated from the sculptor to the Florentine artist. Leoni himself, a month later, wrote again to Buonarroti to make sure that the gift came to its destination. The medals were molded in Rome and carried out in Milan; the creative process is attested by the portrait of Michelangelo in pink wax, signed by Leoni, and now in the British museum.
