The mechanical pick – also referred to as a pneumatic hammer – is used for the manual extraction of coal. It is operated with compressed air and has a weight of approx. nine kilograms. The chisel attachment operates at a stroke frequency of approx. 20 Hertz and is driven into the seam, which causes the coal to loosen up.
