Full-length sculpture of President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), 16th President of the United States until his assassination on April 14, 1865, by John Wilkes Booth. President Lincoln is depicted delivering the Gettysburg address, during the consecration of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg in November 1863, following the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. The sculpture is located in a limestone niche, on a base with four sculptural panels. President Lincoln's left arm is bent and his fist clenched, with a determined expression on his face. The pose gives President Lincoln an assertive and commanding presence. The sculpture is surrounded with eight medallion portraits of American Civil War Union commanders. Each medallion is encircled by a laurel wreath. Below the medallions is a vertical tablet with the names of 555 Union League of Philadelphia members who fought in the Civil War. The text of the Gettysburg Address is displayed above the medallions in gilt letters.
