"Abschied der Auswanderer"

This painting by Christian Ludwig Bokelmann (1844 - 1894), who was originally from Harburg and later worked in Düsseldorf, shows the moving farewell of emigrants, thousands of whom departed from Hamburg Harbour into the New World. Harburg Harbour was also a port of emigration in the 19th century, which inspired the artist to paint this depiction.
