In 1979 friends Paul Reiche III, Erol Otus, and Mathias Genser formed a small publishing business called Fantasy Art Enterprises based upon their fondness for role-playing games (RPG's). During this early period in the development of these games, the trio designed products to augment, or improve, role-playing games for other players based upon their own gaming experiences. They produced a book of spells, magical and technological item cards, and dungeon modules. Reiche and Otus went on to jobs at the RPG firm TSR, best known for its introduction of Dungeons & Dragons, the first and best-recognized RPG. At TSR Reiche contributed to game designs for a number of that firm's publications. In later years he moved to video game design, for which he is more widely recognized.
