The signals had not been seen by the driver, and his train, pulled by locomotive number 1315 'Kennet', collided with a train that was already at the platform, killing five people

Railway accidents were more common at this time than they are now. However, safety measures were being put in place; for example carriages were fitted with continuous brakes making it easier for trains to stop quickly.
