Acetylene generator for a Blériot headlamp. Acetylene, produced by the reaction of calcium carbide to the addition of water, produces a bright white light. The generator’s small size makes it ideal for mobile applications, in the automobile industry for example, where it became widespread before being replaced by dynamos.
