A group of men swim in the surf near a Japanese fishing vessel that was beached in Mauritania in northwest Africa. The title suggests something is being recovered, but there’s no indication the men are salvaging cargo and crew. Instead the photograph itself works to recover how we think of global migration. It offers a counterpoint to stories that focus exclusively on conflict, hardship, suspicion, and escape.
