Captain America (Steven Rogers), created by cartoonist Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, first appeared on the cover of "Captain America Comics #1" in March 1941. The cover featured an illustration of Captain America punching Hitler in the face. The superhero quickly earned a reputation as a patriotic super soldier who frequently fought the Axis Powers of World War II. He remained popular until Captain America comic books were discontinued in 1950. The character had a brief revival in 1953, but he did not become a mainstay until Marvel Comics brought him back in 1964. Captain America has since populated books, movies, toys, and video games.
