Actor Angie Dickinson starred in the TV drama "Police Woman," which aired from 1974 to 1978. The series presented Sgt. Pepper Anderson who worked as an undercover police officer in the Los Angeles Police Department. The series was the first hour-long TV drama to depend on a woman in a starring role. The success of the series encouraged Hollywood to produce other shows in the 1970s that featured women in prominent roles. Though the premise of several of these series that followed were fanciful ("Charlie's Angels," "Wonder Woman," and "The Bionic Woman"), it gave women more visibility in popular culture and expanded the roles of women in television at a time when many American women sought, for the first time, opportunities in diverse ecomonic, political, and social settings.
