"The Real Ghostbusters," an animated series that ran on U.S. television from 1986 to 1991, took up where the popular "Ghostbusters" movies had ended. The cartoon series featured the same characters as the movies--ghostbusters Dr. Peter Venkma, Dr. Egon Spengler, Dr. Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore, and their secretary Janine. The cartoon series made a ghost mascot of Slimer, a hostile ghost in the movies. The series originally ran on ABC, but it was aired on additonal channels in syndication. The series spawned a subseries called "Slimer," and a sequel called "Extreme Ghostbusters." The sequel appeared in 1997.
