What made the Star Wars action figures so popular? In the late 1970s, before the days of home videos, the small 3.75-inch figures of the movie characters were about the only way kids could replay the Star Wars story at home. With the tiny figures of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbecca, Princess Leia, and other characters, kids could reenact scenes from the movies and create their own variations of the story's twists and turns. By the time the movies became available in home video formats, Kenner offered its figures in such variation that kids felt compelled to collect all of them. The toy company continued to issue new production lines of the figures into the 1980s. The last appeared in 1985. Kenner revived the action figures in 1996 and has kept them in production ever since. All told, as of 2012, Kenner has issued the Star Wars action figures in 29 distinct production lines.
