In the 1970s, the ABC network offered a TV series of hip, dedicated detectives serving in South California's "Bay City." "Starsky & Hutch" aired weekly from 1975 to 1979 and featured Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul in the title roles. Amid hip clothes, Dirty-Harry-inspired violence, and fast cars, the two detectives sought out criminals aided by their African American confidental informant named Huggy Bear, played by Antonio Fargas. The series was notable for its portrayal of the two detectives as good buddies, a novel idea in the 1970s when physical displays of brotherly or friendly affection between two males was unusual. The series also strove to present Huggy Bear in a positive light. Owner of a bar called Huggy Bear's, the character became so popular with the show's fans, the creators thought for a time to give Fargas his own show. Though the series lasted only four seasons, it lived on in syndication for several years and was broadcast in nine counties worldwide. The series also inspired a 2004 feature film and video game created by Mind's Eye Productions in 2003.
