Donkey Kong is an arcade game created by Shigeru Miyamoto in 1981, and is the first example of a complete narrative told in video game form, and it employs cut scenes to advance its plot. The game opens with the gorilla climbing a pair of ladders to the top of a construction site. He sets the Lady down and stamps his feet, causing the steel beams to change shape. The protagonist Jumpman (an early version of Mario) climbs up the ladders in an attempt to reach the Lady, avoiding barrels and fireballs along his way. When he finally reaches the Lady, a pink heart appears between them, but then promptly breaks as Donkey Kong steals her away to the next level. The game spawned two arcade sequels and numerous titles for various Nintendo home consoles, beginning with the Game & Watch and NES console and continuing all the way to the current era with the Wii.
