In 1973, artist Mel Birnkrant sought to come up with variations to expand the Colorforms line. The catalog included Mickey Mouse Pop-up Play Set, Mickey Mouse Puppetforms, and Tricky Mickey Magic Colorforms. Birnkrant insisted that all of the artwork would be based upon original Disney images from the 1930s. The sell sheet for Tricky Mickey touted “Mickey Mouse puts on his own magic show with 28 Colorforms plastic “Tricks.” Just place a “Trick” in Mickey’s hat, turn the knob and see the egg turn into a chicken, the frog become a prince, etc. Hours of fun and a whole new dimension in Colorforms.” Despite a lawsuit from Ueeda, a small doll company in New Jersey who had manufactured “Triki Miki” dolls, Tricky Mickey Magic Colorforms proved successful.
