Actor Iwai Hanshiro V

This ukiyo-e print depicts the actor Iwai Hanshiro V in the play "Date Kurabe Okuni Kabuki," portraying Hanyumura Yoemon. The play is based on a true story involving the Sendai clan during the 1660s. To avoid censorship, the drama was set 300 years earlier, during the Muromachi period (1336-1568), and the names were changed to disguise the protagonists. The publisher Maru-zen worked with Toyokuni I for only three years, between 1808 and 1811.
