Using beads as her medium of choice, Joyce Scott creates polemical assemblages of well-known imagery and stereotypes to address controversial topics like sexism and racism. In these two necklaces, Scott is concerned with the Old Testament creation story, questioning the meaning society has attributed to the protagonists’ gender roles. Scott asks her viewer: “Does my work deserve perusal because it cools your anger with humor or because it fans the flames?”
