Adam and Eve

While in medieval times representations of Adam and Eve were only conceivable in a religious context, in the early Modern Age they became an excuse for depicting the human body. The new secular clients’ interest in anatomical studies or erotic motifs was crucial and played an important role in the expansion of their own collections of art and curiosities, particularly as complements to antique pieces. In terms of the motif and Objects depicted – the apple, peacock and dog – the Düsseldorf showpiece can be seen to reference both the Christian couple Adam and Eve and the mythological Paris and Aphrodite. It seems that even at the time, a clear ascription was irrelevant. The interplay, filled with erotic tension, of the animated bodies, which bridges not only the distance between the two figures, is the central theme of this group. (Arne Leopold)
