Lorenzi Stoldo’s Adam,
together with a statue of Eve,
originally decorated the niches of the façade of the church of Santa Maria by
San Celso in Milan. Even
today we do not know for certain why the two sculptures were removed and
replaced with two copies, but we can hypothesise that they were taken down
because in poor condition. The
Adam exhibited in the Museum is now
supported by a carved tree trunk. A
careful and complex restoration completed in 2017 has allowed the quality of
the marble and the fine sculpting to re-emerge from under a dark cover of
patina. The artist references Michelangelo's David both in the position of the arms and in the pose of the
figure, who rests his full weight on his right leg.
