At the southern end of the African continent it was hoped to find a passage that would give access to the Indian Ocean and the spice market. The passage was found and called the Cape of Storms, but the king of Portugal turned it into the Cape of Good Hope, but Camões gave it a semi-human form like Adamastor, son of Neptune.
