They believe that they have travelled from the North to settle down in their current locations of the temperate and sub-tropical regions of the districts of Siang, East Siang, Upper Siang, West Siang, Lower Dibang Valley, Lohit, Shi Yomi and Namsai. The literal meaning of adi is "hill" or "mountain top". Language spoken by the Adis belong to the Sino-Tibetan language family. Adis are spread across the state both in the lower foothill areas and the high altitudes of north westernmost mountains. According to the Adi mythology, they came from their ancestor Abo Tani, and belong to the Tani group of people. Bokar is the sub-tribe of Adis. According to their oral history, the Bokars came after 4 clans of Abo Tani, from a mountain in Mongolia.
