Bertram Ramsay’s experience of commanding invasion fleets made him a natural choice as Allied Naval Commander-in-Chief, responsible for planning and commanding Operation Neptune, the movement of the Allied invasion force across the Channel and the offshore bombardment of German defences on D-Day.
