Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier introduced Christianity to the Indian subcontinent in the 16th century. Mary was patron saint of the Jesuits, and they brought many images of her with them to India. Local artists freely interpreted Christian scenes, such as the Nativity, and created vibrant compositions.
