The son of Vittore Carpaccio, the great Venetian master of the High Renaissance, moved from Venice to Koper in around 1540. The painting workshop he inherited from his father provided Istrian clients with vibrantly colourful altar paintings. Draughtsmanship of enviable quality is subordinated to muted shades of green and brown and an indeterminate landscape in which the outline of a city may be seen. The iconography derives from the famous sermons of St Bernardino of Siena. (Edvilijo Gardina)
