The buzzard is the most common bird of prey in the UK. Buzzards look quite compact when resting, but when in flight they appear much larger. They hold their wings in a shallow ‘V’ shape as they glide, and their tails fan out. An adult buzzard’s wingspan can reach about one and a half metres.
A buzzard’s ‘mewing’ call can be mistaken for that of a cat.
Buzzards can be found in most habitats, including urban areas. They employ three main hunting techniques: searching from a high perch, soaring over open terrain and hovering before dropping onto prey, or walking along the ground looking for insects.
