Hedgehogs are native to mainland Britain. Their nests are made of moss and leaves, and can be found in parks, gardens and farmland. The hedgehog’s preferred areas are woodland hedges, hedgerows and gardens.
Their coats contain around 6,000 spines. They are hollow hairs made of keratin. Hedgehogs shed their baby spines and replace them with adult ones, much like human teeth. The process is called ‘quilling’.
Hedgehogs are omnivorous, but their favourite food is slugs – they may eat forty or more a night!
