Il Volo su Vienna was painted to celebrate the historic aviation enterprise of 9 August 1918 when, a few months after the end of the Great War, eight Italian planes flew over the Austrian capital throwing flyers, in which Gabriele D'Annunzio also participated. The composition was exhibited the same year in Rome at the first National Exhibition of Futurist Art, where it was appreciated by Vittorio Emanuele III who wanted to buy it for his own collection.
