Ben Enwonwu, one of Nigeria's most celebrated artists, was born in 1917 in Onitsha. A child prodigy, Enwonwu studied under the guidance of British colonial educator Kenneth C. Murray. His early works were exhibited in London, Glasgow, and San Francisco, and he became renowned for blending African themes with modern artistic techniques.
In Africa Dances, Enwonwu’s mastery of the human form is evident. This watercolor painting captures the dynamic motion of dancers, utilizing earthy tones of yellow, red, and black. The angularity of the figures emphasizes their movement, portraying dance as a vivid expression of life and culture.
