For the artist, making objects by-hand ran in her family. Her grandmother taught her stitching and embroidery, while her grandfather taught her woodcarving. This influence continues to pervade her work, even as she explores difficult themes. Contemplating the endless terrorist attacks that have plagued Karachi for more than a decade, Suleman had hoped to dedicate a steel bird for every victim. She soon found this impossible, as the death rates increased faster than she could fabricate birds.
