The painting depicts Schleswig-Holstein troops surrendering to the Danish army in Flensburg after the Battle of Bov on 9 April 1848. The Danish forces won a convincing victory and routed the rebel forces. The Battle of Bov was the first major battle in what later became known as the First Schleswig War, 1848-51.
