Minutes of evidence taken before the Select Committee on the Age of Marriage Bill. In 1929 the age of marriage was raised to 16 for both sexes. The change in law was as a result of a campaign by the National Union of Societies for Equal Citizenship (NUSEC). Previously girls of 12 years of age and boys of 14 could legally be married.
