Starting in the early 1980s, Stephen Jones has closely collaborated with Belgian designers such as Walter Van Beirendonck and A.F.Vandevorst. Appropriately, MoMu houses the largest collection of Stephen Jones’s hats – more than 120 items – outside Great Britain. This astonishing collection, came to the museum as a generous long-term loan from the private collections of Antwerp collectors Geert Bruloot and Eddy Michiels.
Both Jones’s couture and ready-to-wear hats are fashion statements. This particular item was shown in the collection 'Desert Rose' that came about following his stay on a ranch in Utah. The form of the pastel coloured hat, rendered in foam rubber, takes inspiration from a mineral frequently found in the area.
