New York, United States

While on liberty, some sailors wanted to display aspects of their personality on their U.S. Navy–issued uniforms. One form of customization was liberty cuffs. Because liberty cuffs were banned by the Navy, sailors sewed these patches on the inside of jumper cuffs and turned them up once on leave. If sailors were caught wearing these cuffs, their leave could be cancelled and uniform confiscated.
