Albert Chapman Ellithorpe was appointed Lieutenant in the First Indian Home Guards by President Abraham Lincoln during the U.S. Civil War. The infantry organized in Le Roy, Kansas on May 22,1862. Made up of combination of white, Native American, and African Americans soldiers the group fought in several battles in the Midwest. During one of their most notable actions they followed Confederate General Sterling Price through western Missouri.
