A creature that often featured in lantern form was al buraq - a winged, white animal in Islamic tradition said to have carried the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Jerusalem and up in the heavens and back by night. Al buraq is almost always portrayed in art as having a human, usually a woman’s, head and face. In this lantern, which was built by Lion Mountain Lantern Club, the figure of al buraq is combined with a mosque. The lantern displays both of the distinctive types of paperwork used in lantern construction. The body of al buraq is covered with paper frills, while the mosque displays the cut paperwork designs (takada) typical of mosque and ship lanterns.
