Johan Simons made his Epidaurus debut with Alcestis, a contemporary adaptation of Euripides’ play, reimagined through Anne Carson’s poetic text. Blending Gluck’s operatic music with minimalist staging, Simons replaced the traditional Greek Chorus with four singers and an organ, creating a haunting soundscape. This emotionally charged production explored sacrifice, mortality, and estrangement, offering a deeply human interpretation of Alcestis’ return from the underworld as a stranger to her own family.
