This fossil is actually a natural cast of a fern created when the white mineral
filled in the space left behind by the fern. This fossil was found in a coal bed in Pennsylvania. Coal beds are the carbonized remains of prehistoric swamps, from a time when the world was mostly covered in such vegetation.
