This bust is one of several copies made by Dixey after the ca. 1793 marble original by the Italian sculptor, Giuseppe Ceracchi (see 1928.19). Images of Hamilton were in great demand following his tragic death in 1804, and Dixey, like the portraitist John Trumbull, produced and sold numerous replicas. Dixey began producing these busts two months after Hamilton's death.
