In this letter from Alexander Hamilton to his wife Elizabeth, he asks her to forgive him for not taking her on the expedition with him. "Don't think me unkind for not talking of your making a journey to the Southward. It would put us to a thousand inconveniences and would in fact be of no avail; for while there I must be engrossed in my military duties. Heaven knows how much it costs me to make the sacrifice I do."
