Born Elizabeth Alice Munn in 1866, Alice Austen’s paternal surname was dropped after her father abandoned the family shortly after her birth. Alice’s mother moved into her parents home, known as Clear Comfort, when Alice was a young child. Alice Austen would spend seventy-eight years of her life here.
