Alice Bemis Taylor was the lead female founder and benefactor of cultural and social institutions in early Colorado Springs.
Alice Bemis Taylor, who was Colorado College’s first woman trustee, is fondly remembered as “Lady Bountiful,” for the expansive contributions she made to Colorado Springs buildings and institutions. In 1936, she funded the construction of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center to provide jobs during the Great Depression, and to build a community arts complex that is vibrant to this day. Alice led the effort to establish one of Colorado’s earliest day care centers in 1897. She funded the historic 1923 Tudor building that houses the Colorado Springs Day Nursery, which still provides affordable care for children of working mothers.
"If we did not hope for more than we can accomplish, we would not be working up to a higher ideal.“ — Alice Bemis Taylor
