"The Alien Acts of 1798 increased the president's ability to deport and imprison non-citizen (aliens) deemed difficult or dangerous by the government. The period for needed to be naturalized was extended from 5 years to 14. The acts were largely seen as an attempt to diminish opposition to the Adams's administration and a means to control immigration from certain countries, such as Ireland and France.
