Allan Kaprow is widely regarded as the inventor of “Happenings”and “Environment”, where art moves radically from traditional forms presented to the public hanging on a wall or sitting on a plinth. Kaprows’s environmenthas been widely reinvented since their first incarnations, yet the show at the Calder represents the first re-invention of the iconic environment, YARD in the UK. In the exhibition, the space within The Calder was filled with around 3000 tyres in a reinvention of the original installation at the backyard and sculpture garden of the Martha Jackson Gallery in 1961.
