The painting refers to events during the reign of the emperor. His portrait is in the centre. Above it, three putti bring the Rudolfian crown as an expression of divine authority. The figures of the horse tamer and St. Michael next to him represent imperial virtues. The Habsburgian eagle beneath the bust uses sword and crucifix to topple envy and stupidity into the abyss. Two female figures at the end symbolise the conflict with the Hungarian Transylvanians and the Turks.
