In 1832 Rufus Bliss founded the R. Bliss Manufacturing Company in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Originally, the company produced wooden screws and clamps for piano and cabinet making, but by the 1870s it made toys and games too. The company's more popular items included lithographed ships, wooden play sets, and alphabet blocks, and the toys soon gained a reputation for their beautiful colors and high quality artwork. The company went out of business in 1935, after more than sixty years of toy production.
