This altar, found at Chapel Hill, south of Housesteads Roman Fort in 1702, was dedicated to Jupiter and to the divine emperors under the command of Quintus Julius Maximus, Prefect of the First Cohort of Tungrians. The Tungrians were the first unit based at Housesteads when it was built, and stayed there until the 4th century. They were originally recruited from German-speaking tribes in the district of Tongres, in modern Belgium.
